We added another 1,200 miles to the tandem's odometer in addition to the 4,800 from last year's trek from New Hampshire to San Francisco. Seeing the country at an average pace of 10 mph, along back roads, self-supported, on a bicycle has been one of the greatest experiences of our lives! Aside from the physical and mental challenges of traveling this way, well, no, rather because of them, it has been one of those life changing times. It's important to have those "let's shake things up a little" events in life and do things that we're not sure we can do. I've never been a confident bicyclist, but I like relying on my wits and trust my gut instincts. People laugh when Gary and I tell them that we really don't consider ourselves great bicyclists but rather curious adventurers.

For now we are back home but not for long. Next week we leave for a cross-country drive with Gary's sister, Mary Lyn, and her two little dogs, Sassy and Gretchen. Every big adventure requires a support system and at the helm of ours for the past 2 years has been Mary Lyn. When Gary and I first started to plan this trip and put feelers out to the family to see if anyone was interested in an extended stay at our house on the Cape while we were out scratching this crazy itch, Mary Lyn agreed to do it. Granted, it required her to move from the West Coast, but that was OK by her. Mare has been the one who has kept up the homestead for us while sending periodic emergency packages and always being the first one to respond to our emails. We could not have done it without her! So, we will be on the road again, returning Mare and "the girls" to California, all the while reminiscing about these past 2 years, lamenting the price of gas, stopping to see a few sites (The Grand Canyon for one), and visiting family all along the way.

As for the rest of our support system, we thank you one and all for your encouragement and thoughtfulness during our Big Adventure! It's hard to adequately convey how much everyone's messages, prayers, offers of a bed or meal, rides to get us started and to get us home, and general well-wishes helped Gary and me keep going on this sometimes arduous journey. These kindnesses truly made all the difference. In return we hope you've enjoyed our tales from the road. We sure had a good time exploring on two wheels!

Signing off once again,
Gary and Cathy and little Mojo

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLOXDJo8Jbn7uBcB5fQimCKp_x6hG-h444sMjG6Ie8iX9xx74l9qgO-qn2Re8mrLpRjpGKbR5ns1PKdBvOZZt1RlteQB63HNAy_2mQKqq_yeS_QCtdQYGeyZ7bv_QgQwegLyZiVTvBfoI/s320/SSCN2531.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5217708681124611554" />Second Windhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15240852982543929459noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715748207323162135.post-86710992501767243092008-06-15T13:10:00.001-07:002008-06-15T13:10:39.332-07:00Connecticut

We entered the northwest hills of CT today. It is almost time for us the head back out on the road. Preventive maintenance is completed on the bike, the bills are paid and the route has been mapped. All that is left is to get to our starting point.

This part our our journey finds us riding up the Atlantic Coast. We depart from Savannah, Georgia the end of this month and ride north with spring. If all go as planned, we hope to be enjoying the 4th of July fireworks with family on Cape Cod. Then its back to the real world for a while.

Signing off for now. The weather has been absolutely gorgeous and we've been able to do all of the touristy things you do in this beautiful city - riding the cable cars, visiting Fishermen's Wharf, hanging out in Haight/Ashbury.

We are staying with friends in Tiburon and riding the ferry across the Bay to the city daily. We cannot say enough about the hospitality and generosity of Bill and Liddy S. They have opened their home to us which allowed us the time to consider what's next for our adventure.

Because of the fires in Southern California and the shorter riding days, we had to face the difficult decision of when should we conclude our ride for this season. After much soul searching, we thought it was best to end this portion of our bike trip in San Francisco. It has been quite a journey with 4700 miles under our wheels. We look forward to continuing our American odyssey sometime in late February or early March of next year.

Although we have stopped riding for now, it is not yet time to return to the east coast. We do plan to visit some National Parks before we return to our home on Cape Cod for the holiday season.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and encouragement as we made our way across America at ten miles per hour.Second Windhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15240852982543929459noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715748207323162135.post-17418680867409821142007-10-21T14:59:00.001-07:002007-10-22T18:59:17.353-07:00San Francisco<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigD4UNDfM_Cm3rVHwmjug2-i-sTWm1Su4A2QA3pNkR395ge4WhPvU4K82kKB9v5zxZ5oPN6Cmwa2UBgvWQ1RwcBbiI-NP6ve0GPAmh79EfHBV0RgWCV1D7N8aXP3lmKOHzsRQZkj-nxLY/s320/SSCN1384.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5124345861502989954" />
We got to the outskirts of San Francisco today and got our first view of the skyline, harbor and Golden Gate bridge.
